Less cute, but also: This is SPARTA!

New house, Day 2

May 29th, 2008 - 11:37 PM

Got back to the house today to let the delivery people for the appliances in. The plumber showed up to fix the hot water tank while we were there - it turned out to be a faulty pressure-release valve. The hot water was running before we left. The appliances arrived at the very end of the delivery window, so we ended up sitting around for 3 hours total, playing cards on a recycling bin. The appliances are sweet-ass though, but then I already knew that. The kitchen looks much better with them in there.

Took a few boxes and random things over since we were making the trip. We also went to Walmart and picked up some stuff for the downstairs bathroom. That was probably the most fun shopping I’ve had in a while… and I feel lame on several levels by saying that. It really started to feel like my house around that point.

Today nothing that bad happened, other than when we arrived there was a trench through part of the driveway surrounding the front steps. They were installing lamp-posts in all the yards as it turns out. They had it filled in by the time we left, but apparently the wiring needs to go through the garage foundation which means they’ll have to drill (it’s more fun to piss off the homeowners than to have done this before they move in!).

We watched them flattening the landscape 100 meters behind our house. I guess the zoning was approved, cuz I don’t think farmers fields flourish when you put sewers and gravel all over the place.

Tomorrow the appliances get installed at 10am. We’re almost entirely packed at this point. I even packed the PC up, depriving myself of any chance to play games… though I figure if I’m really desperate the xbox wouldn’t be too hard to unpack. Come to think of it, I think this laptop can pl

New House, Day 1

May 29th, 2008 - 11:23 PM

Closed on the new house! Picked up the keys! Went there and it felt so freakin good! Even the following things didn’t entirely take the good feeling away:

- front door unlocked, garage open
- urine on toilet seat in the powder room (nothing says “Welcome to your new home” like cleaning up someone else’s piss!)
- only 3 of the 15 items on the pre-delivery inspection were fixed
- Hot water tank not installed properly - attempting to use hot water resulted in water leaking onto basement floor

Other than that, things looked pretty good. The closet under the basement still needs the insulation redone, but that will be on the 30-day inspection and I don’t intend to use that space until it is fixed. They fixed most of the nicks/scratches in the paint. The hardwood floors look great, and everything was vacuumed/cleaned. A few more days till we’re living there!

Thoughts on cats

If I get a second cat I think I will name him Master Chief.

Death of an old girlfriend.

July 5th, 2007 - 8:13 PM

Stephanie was my first “girlfriend” ever, in grade 3. I was smitten with her at the time and when we took a stray cat in I forced my family to name it after her. She dumped me about a week later because I wanted to kiss her. :)

I haven’t seen her in 10 years, but I’m still really saddened to hear about this.

Spring

April 24th, 2007 - 12:55 PM

Bye bye winter, you won’t be missed. Be sure to take all your cold weather and mucus you left in my sinuses. Prick.

Warm weather is here, I’ll have a house come January, taxes are almost done… things are looking up! The whole house thing really has me feeling domestic. In fact, it has me feeling so domestic that I’m looking forward to spring cleaning. Having seen to the townhome models and pouring over our new house’s floorplan I feel more and more cramped in the apartment. We have more furniture than we can reasonably accomodate (partially due to the coat rack, er - I mean elliptical trainer - in the center of the living room). So to make some space I’m getting rid of some furnicular items, replacing three of our four computers with a single laptop, throwing out useless clutter, evicting Shannon, and shaving the cat.

Oh and I beat the spots in three days. Mike 1, Shannon 0.

Plus they unblocked my site at work, mostly. So more posts likely in the future.

*cough*

I have Shannon’s spots and I’m sick to boot.

But I bought a house yesterday, so I’m not suicidal yet.
